Jungian Sandplay Therapy is a specific method of sand therapy developed by Dora Kalff for children and adults.  It works as any play therapy does to prevent and resolve psychosocial difficulties and/or ultimately achieve optimal growth, what Carl Jung termed individuation.  It is a unique non-directive therapy/play therapy technique that engages the senses and facilitates the expression of feelings and experiences that have been unavailable to cognitive and verbal awareness.  The importance of therapeutic access to non-verbal experiences has been strongly supported by neuroscience research during the past twenty years.

The following are programs designed to help a masters level, or higher, clinician become proficient in Sandplay Therapy.  All meet the requirements for certification through the Sandplay Therapists of American and the International Society of Sandplay Therapists.

I am no longer an APT provider.  I need an RPT to monitor my publicity. _______________________________________________________________________________-________________________________________________________________________________

Research and experience with Sandplay therapy shows its efficacy in treating trauma and abuse.  As a non-verbal, play therapy technique, it is ideal for use with children but also very successful with adults.  Attending this workshop will introduce you to the powerful world of Sandplay therapy through case examples and various case vignettes which demonstrate how sandplay helps clients resolve trauma, abuse, and developmental wounding as well as more traditional therapy issues such as depression and anxiety.  The child's world is the world of symbol so any play therapy technique is in their language. Sandplay is rooted in Jungian theory and is a non directive treatment like many of the play therapy techniques.
Goals and Objectives
Participants will:
1) Verbalize three types of trauma that have been successfully treated with sand and play therapy.
2) Have basic understanding of the history, origins, and theory of Sandplay.
3) Understand an overview of Jungian terminology and how it applies to Sandplay.
4) Recognize elements of a complete Sandplay process.
5) Recognize through sandpictures how using this type of play therapy approach shows a progression of improvement.

"Sandplay Therapy:  Getting Started" an introductory program
This program is designed to give you the basics of sandplay and how to begin using this method of play therapy treatment with your clients.  Topics include: history and origins of sandplay; Kalffian theory; basic Jungian terminology, differentiation of Kalffian Sandplay from other uses of the sandtray; practical considerations, setting up, note taking, pictures, Introducing sandplay and talking about the benefits of Sandplay and play therapy to clients.  A case will be presented to demonstrate how sandplay works.
Sandplay is a non-verbal three-dimensional form of psychotherapy used with children and adults. There are different theoretical methods of working with sand and miniatures. Dora Kalff, a Jungian analyst and a personal friend of Carl Jung’s, created this method.  Her intent is for the unconscious to be in charge of the process. In this non directive treatment, the key to sandplay and many forms of play therapy is that the unconscious is invited to direct the process allowing the psyche to be restructured and healing to take place.   For more information about Sandplay go to the Sandplay Therapists of America website, or on play therapy go to the Association for Play Therapy.

The Great Mother and Great Father in Sandplay: understanding on a cultural level part I and part II

The study of sandplay includes understanding Jungian concepts.  These programs are about the complex world of the archetypes of The Great Mother and The Great Father in the collective.

This class will count toward symbolism hours for certification with Sandplay Therapists of America.  In essence the more you comprehend the big picture the better you will be able to interpret how a client is using figures in the sand.  Sandplay examples will be included.

The programs will look at the influence of The Great Mother and The Great Father in western culture over time and their impact on the collective unconscious.  Art, mythology, fairy tales, movies and television reflect a society’s orientation.  Each archetype has different characteristics impacting cultural development.  Part one will examine the Great Mother and the split between opposites.  The second program will examine the Great Father and “cultural” coming to consciousness.  Finally, we will look at where we are at this point in time and discuss the impact on our culture.  It is intended for therapists who want to learn more about sandplay or Jungian theory.

The energy of each stance is reflected in different ways in therapy and in sandplay.  It is recommended you attend both sessions. You must attend the first program in order to attend the second program.

Handouts will be emailed the evening before for you to print. No cancellations will be accepted after that time.  You will receive a link and password in your confirmation so be sure I have an accurate email address.

Fire and Sand: he Living Mythology of Pele in Sandplay Therapy

Dr. Lorraine R. Freedle Sandplay Teacher- STA/ISST
Natural disasters including wild fires, hurricanes and volcanic eruptions displace millions of people around the world and cause community-wide trauma. Sandplay is an expressive, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed therapeutic method that helps children and adults to alleviate symptoms of distress following traumatic events and improve community resilience. Sandplay has been used effectively around the world with communities in crisis.  At a time when the world is dealing with the Covid19 pandemic it is all the more important to be prepared to treat the trauma resulting from having gone through this unusual occurrence.

On May 3, 2018 Tutu Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano took her lava form and erupted forcefully for three months on Hawai`i Island claiming nearly 1,000 homes. As needs for food and shelter were addressed, local sandplay therapists mobilized to provide emotional relief and support.  This workshop explores the living mythology of Pele, how she appears in the sandplay images of children and adults, and the use of mobile sandplay therapy in times of community crisis. Participants will view a brief, award-winning documentary film, Fire and Sand and explore the archetypal patterns of destruction and creation as we address Covid-19 and racial injustice in today’s world.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify archetypal patterns in the Pele myth and in today’s world crisis.
  2. Explore the “living mythology” of Pele in the Hawaiian culture and in sandplay therapy.
  3. Identify three ways that sandplay therapy alleviates symptoms of traumatic stress.
  4. Distinguish mobile sandplay in relief work from traditional applications of sandplay therapy.
Who should attend: Play/sandplay therapists, social workers, psychologists, or counselors interested in a post-graduate levelworkshop and in earning training hours toward credentialing as a sandplay therapist.
Dr. Lorraine R. Freedle is a pediatric neuropsychologist and international sandplay teacher (STA/ISST). She is the Clinical Director of Pacific Quest in Hilo, Hawaii where she also maintains a private practice, Black Sand Neuropsychological Services. Dr. Freedle has published numerous professional articles/chapters and currently serves as President of the Sandplay Therapists of America and Research Editor for the Journal of Sandplay Therapy®.  She co-produced the award-winning documentary film, Fire and Sand: Healing in the Wake of the 2018 Kilauea Eruption.

Mindfulness and Co-transference

in complex trauma or symbolic therapy
Working with complex trauma or with the symbolic realm complicates the co-transference.  As a therapist it is important to have capacity for mindfulness. When dealing with complex trauma there is an energetic pull – hyper arousal (energy going up) and hypo arousal (energy going down.) These energy movements occur when clients dissociate. When working on a symbolic level the pull of the archetypes is not only pulling on your clients but also on you as observer.  It is crucial for us to stay grounded through mindfulness increasing the “right brain to right brain connection” allowing the clients to improve emotion regulation.  Without a solid right brain-to-right brain connection this balance is difficult for a client to obtain.

There are many programs on being mindful but a therapist’s mindfulness is a bit different than what we might teach clients about being in the moment.  This program will delve deeper into what we are trying to accomplish with mindfulness, some information on what is happening in the brain, and how to achieve an effective mindfulness practice.

"Good Grief:
Contemporary Grief Theory and Practice"
Barbara Brugler, LISW-S, BCD, CST-T

Worthington, OH 43085
Grief is a universal human experience and mourning is an ongoing developmental life task.  During bereavement, human beings can grow and flourish through attention to symbolic processes that allow for integration of the lost person into the psyche and ritual that “re-members” the deceased into the community of the living.  This workshop reviews historical ideas about grief and loss and introduces relevant contemporary grief theory.  We briefly delineate recent theoretical work on continuing bonds theories and the dual process model of grief.   We explore the spiritual, narrative, and relational turns in the medical humanities that correspond to new understandings of grief and loss.  We frame play therapy and other expressive practices as creative processes that allow for full integration of the grief experience.
We explore meanings of death that emerge in traditional talk therapy as well as in expressive non-directive therapy such as play therapy, art therapy, and sandplay to help clinicians distinguish death presentation in all types of treatment.  We discuss ritual around death on days such as All Hallows Eve, the Day of the Dead, and All Saints Day.  Examples from Jungian Sandplay Therapy are used to demonstrate the different meanings of death symbolism in conversation, dreams, sandplay, and play therapy.  A complete case is presented as well as selected sandpictures to demonstrate points from the presentation.
Participants are encouraged to bring a memento from a loved one who has died (whether human or a pet) to place on an “altar” as a way of honoring those who have passed before us.
Goals
       Participants will:
  1. Distinguish two contemporary grief theories from historical ideas about grief.
  2. Name three different ways to address grief and the meaning of death in mental health and play therapy.
  3. List the benefits of expressive/play therapies for use during bereavement.
  4. Name one dynamic of play/expressive therapy when used for adults or children experiencing the grief process.
  5. Name two other meanings of death in art, sand, or play therapy

Introduction to Jungian Sandplay Therapy
Dyane Sherwood, Ph.D. & Barbara Brugler LISW-S, BCD
Space is limited so early registration is advised. Play Therapy credit provided.
Sandplay is a unique non-verbal therapy/play therapy technique that engages the senses and facilitates the expression of feelings and experience that have been unavailable to cognitive and verbal awareness. The importance of therapeutic access to non-verbal experience has been strongly supported by neuroscience research during the past twenty years.
In this workshop you will learn about the basic theory and practice of sandplay therapy and how to integrate it into your work with both adults and children. Sandplay will be distinguished from other forms of play therapy that use water, sand, or miniatures.
Sandplay was created by the Swiss Jungian Analyst, Dora Kalff, as a non-directive treatment in which the unconscious of the patient is given a “free and protected” space to create something in a small wooden box with sand and with access to miniatures. The psyche of the patient guides the process.
Presenter: Dyane N. Sherwood, Ph.D., Certified Member, Sandplay Therapists of America and the International Society for Sandplay Therapy; Jungian Analyst, Certified in Adult and in Child & Adolescent Analysis; Licensed Psychologist, CA and OH. Day of the Dead: Grief and Remembrance in a Cultural Context
Location: Oberlin, Ohio
Presenters: Dyane N. Sherwood, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist OH 6693, CST, Jungian Analyst and Barbara Brugler, LISW-S, BCD, CST-T
This Mexican festival is celebrated on October 31, when the veil between the worlds is believed to be more permeable. This program is a non-directive, Jungian based program, which will use symbol to understand grief in its application to Sandplay or play therapy. We will begin the workshop with the creation of an altar, and each person will be asked to bring a memento of one who has passed to the other side. We will look at the active imagination of a patient who came to therapy experiencing an inconsolable grief, as well as that of an adolescent needing to mourn childhood ideals and move toward adulthood. Participants will be given the opportunity to choose an avenue of private active imagination to enter more deeply into the present relationship to the being whose memento they brought for the altar.  For those who practice sandplay and play therapy you will find active imagination a tool to use along with other nondirective Jungian approaches.  Sandplay images will be presented to demonstrate symbolic use of death images for any play therapy type technique.

3.     Give two examples of ways that patients in therapy can be supported to use the arts, Sandplay, any play therapy technique and active imagination to make their experience of mourning and grief more meaningful
4.     Apply this paradigm to life transitions where the old way of living can be mourned and honored in order to move on to a new phase of life

"The First Two Sand Pictures: Understanding their Meaning and Importance"
Presented by Barbara Brugler, LISW-S, BCD, CSPTM
This program is intended for those who have attended at least one of the introductory Sandplay programs. The first two sand pictures show the problem to be worked on in the process, the client’s relationship to their own unconscious, how they feel about therapy, and possible solutions to the problem. Special effort is made to understand the first two pictures as they lay the foundation for the rest of the process. Sandplay which is rooted in Jungian theory,  works as any non-directive play therapy does to prevent and resolve psychosocial difficulties and/or ultimately achieve optimal growth, what Carl Jung termed individuation.  This therapy is rooted in Jungian theory.
Participants will begin to learn how to interpret these three points:  learning basics for how to look at a initial sandpictures, tying what we see with what the clients says, and the case history. When working on the symbolic level play therapy interpretation has certain elements in common.  The final step is to research the symbols in the tray and putting it all together.

Sandplay Therapy is a specific method of sand therapy developed by Dora Kalff for children and adults.  It works as any play therapy modality does to prevent and resolve psychosocial difficulties and/or ultimately achieve optimal growth, what Carl Jung termed individuation. Its foundation is Jungian and it is a non-directive approach. In this session we will look at the developmental level around the third year of life and on to adolescence.  Understanding how a client uses the symbolic realm to achieve consciousness or executive functions allows the therapist to see clients restructuring there psyche as they work.   This programs begins when the self is first constellated in the child and ends with town development, a point which Dora saw having great importance in a Sandplay process. Goals and objectives:
Participants will:
1)  Learn the four possible themes in the initial two sand pictures.
2)  Have an overview of what to look at to help determine those themes.
3)  Learn the process with which one begins to understand a sand picture and any play therapy on a symbolic level.
4)  Learn the importance of consultation to help understand clients sand pictures and play therapy, pulling together theory and practice .

“Reading the Sand"
In Sandplay therapy the sand represents the unconscious.  As soon as a client makes contact with the sand they have entered this realm.  Sandplay works as any non-directive play therapy does to prevent and resolve psychosocial difficulties and/or ultimately achieve optimal growth, what Carl Jung termed individuation.  This therapy is rooted in Jungian theory.
In this session we will explore how clients use the sand, and possible meanings of these uses through an experiential exercise and lecture.  Sandplay theory will be discussed using sandpictures to demonstrate.  This program is intended for any therapist who has done at least one introductory level course in Sandplay.  It will qualify toward certification through the Sandplay Therapists of America and CEU credit for counselors, social workers, and MFT’s in Ohio and Play Therapy CEU’s.

"Beginning Jungian Theory: Background, the Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious”
The Jungian theory program will begin with an introduction to Carl Jung and an overview of his theory using a model developed by Estelle Weinrib.  The foundation of his theory is the archetypes and the collective unconscious.  In order for Sandplay therapists, play therapists and anyone working from a Jungian perspective to learn to interpret the symbols in a sandpicture, dream or play,  an understanding of the root of symbol is necessary.  The symbol may change over time but the same archetype may be represented.
The program will involve an experiential exercise to help you experience how the archetypes and the collective unconscious work. Theory will also be presented to help you understand how the archetypes function in this non-directive approach.

Sandplay is a non-directive three-dimensional form of psychotherapy used with children and adults. Through this particular type of sand therapy or some of the other methods of play therapy the unconscious directs the process enabling the restructuring of the psyche.  For this reason following the training directives can lead to more effective therapy. When one is working on a symbolic level it can be deceptively simple - it is actually one of the most complicated kinds of treatment there is.  It is important to understand the ethical aspects and how working on a symbolic level creates a more intense co- transference than in general therapy and in play therapy.  Transference and counter transference issues can cause ethical violations in any form of treatment and will be explored in this program.
         Goals and Objectives
Participants will:
*Understand the International  Society of Sandplay therapy code of ethics.
*Understand the importance of following the training guidelines
*Name three possible counter transference issues that can lead to ethical violations, including during play therapy.
*Explore issues that make it hard to see children and do parental guidance with their parents especially when you are working in the non-verbal treatments such as sandplay or play therapy
*Name two reasons that working on the symbolic level in Sandplay or play therapy can create a need to be more aware of yourself during a session

“A study in symbolism” takes you into the world of symbolism - combining the definitions of a symbol with fairy tale and mythology study in order to get a glimpse of the archetype they represent. You will do some research on a symbol before the day of the training so that you have something in mind to work on this day.  If you have a miniature of the symbol bring it with you but you can check to see if I have it in my collection.  We will do some experiential work with that figure.   We will explore what is needed to deeply understand symbol and the archetype(s) it represents – this is the heart of symbolism. Understanding symbolism is equally important in play therapy, dream analysis, and sandpictures.

Full certification requires hours in symbolism and the writing of at least one symbol paper.  This program will enter into the world but writing a paper helps you understand at a deeper level what symbolism is and how to apply that to interpreting sandpictures or play therapy.
Goals:
*Name two aspects of the archetype(s) your symbol is connected to
*Visually see how a symbol comes alive in a sandpicture or play therapy
*Name three characteristics of your symbol
* Define the study of symbolism whether in dreams, sandplay or play therapy
*Relate your symbol to your personal life
*Describe the interconnection between symbol, fairy tales, mythology and the ability to begin to understand the archetype in all forms of symbolic work including dreams, sandplay, and play therapy

Sandplay Case Consultation: Different topics each time
You do not have to present a case to attend or receive consultation credit.  CEU's are offered for group consultation only.
Consultation allows the trainee to integrate theory and practice.  It is a vital part of learning to be a sandplay therapist.  In consultation trainees bring in sandpictures from their clients and the consultants helps them understand what each picture might mean.
Various topics in case consultation with one or more of these consultants: consultations will be announced with each consultation opportunity.

Joe Meyer, ACSW, Certified Teaching Member for Sandplay Therapy from Wisconsin
Joe is a founding member of the Minnesota Sandplay Assocation and has served on the national board for the Sandplay Therapists of America.  He is retired from practice but continues to teach and do consultation.  Over the years he has worked in inpatient and outpatient settings with all ages giving him a rich practice expereince.  Living where he does he is also very connected to the Native American Culture.

“WHY AREN’T THERE MORE GOOD CHILD THERAPISTS OUT THERE?”
This is a question posed in an online discussion.  Many answers were offered – too much work, too little training, etc.  So why should you make the extra effort to become proficient at working with kids?

Simply put they are the future of the world.  Treat them today and not only do they have a shot at being healthy productive adults but also in they can raise healthy productive children contributing to the next generation's health.

More personally there are not enough child therapists out there; this means more referrals for you.   You can build your practice and enrich the world at the same time.  It’s a win win!

Why not?  The complaints: that kids are harder to work with; you have to balance working with the parents; there is also more outside contacts with teachers, guidance counselors and doctors which can all become potential referral sources if you handle it right growing your practice even more.  If you treat children you will find your practice grows.

Why not?  Most parents want after school times but some are preschoolers, some are home schooled, and many who are having problems with behavior at school do well with a break from school once a week.  I find it works best to see about half kids and half adults for balance.  I learn a lot about what is going on with kids in general from the childhood stories shared by adults.  As we all know even adults need late in the day appointments.  Sometimes we are able to see kids at lunchtime and before school.  You need to balance your hours just like you would do with any client.

I am planning a multi program series for those who love kids but know nothing about treatment with children and for those who are already working with kids but are looking for knew ideas of how to have success in treating them.

presents:
“Understanding Jungian Functions & Attitudes
10:00-4 PM
Stephen T. Weed, M.S.
Relational Care Associate
Carl Jung’s theory of Psychological Types (1921/1971) continues to influence how we perceive, understand, and make decisions about our immediate, personal world. Jung first noted and defined our current notions of Introvert & Extravert and detailed the mental processes of Sensation & Intuition and Thinking & Feeling.  These attitudes and functions form the foundation for the MBTI® that has become the most popular personality assessment tool on the planet.
In this session we will learn about Jung’s original theory. Therapists will begin to learn how to identify Jung’s functions and attitudes in everyday situations and how these can be applied in sandplay and exhibited in sandpictures.
This program is intended for anyone who has an interest in Jungian theory or in learning more about sandplay.  It will qualify toward certification through the Sandplay Therapists of America and CEU credit for counselor’s social worker in Ohio.
